Committee discusses Phase II route grant

At the Wednesday, Aug. 15 meeting of the Quality of Life/Leadership committee details were discussed about Phase II of the Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) grant through the SD Department of Transportation (DOT). Representatives from the DOT did a site visit on Wednesday, Aug. 8 and gave approval to go ahead with the grant application. Phase II will include a direct route to the Faulkton swimming pool and one block from 8thAve. to the corner of 7th and Court Street (across from EastView apartment complex). Public art has a role to play in economic development. It helps develop a town’s identity and character. It can tell the history of a place, inspire people and attract visitors too. Faulkton, South Dakota is a tiny town with a big commitment to the arts. During the summer of 2018, the community supported the creation of two large-scale murals from international artists. GROW SD celebrates anniversary with business loan special

In 1978, GROW South Dakota made its first business loans.  In the 40 years since then, the agency has had significant impact on businesses and communities throughout northeastern South Dakota and beyond. To celebrate this milestone, GROW SD is offering a business loan special. GROW SD’s revolving loan fund was established in 1978 with the purpose of supporting economic development in 22 northeastern South Dakota counties through small business loans and job creation. Since that time, the agency has made 2,009 loans for a total of more than $69.7 million to 1,214 area businesses (as of 3/31/18). Click here for the complete article.
Hope’s Park & Playground becomes a reality

They met at the site of Hope’s Playground and Park on Wednesday, July 18 especially for Aida to present the funds she raised from her 4-H project “Painted Rocks for Cancer and Hope’s Park” to the park’s organizer, Beth Deiter. Rocks were painted various cancer ribbon colors and “decorated” with a word of hope or decoupaged with a cancer survivor sticker. They were then sprayed with sealant. Kenneth A. Bartholomew, MD, of Fort Pierre, received the South Dakota State Medical Association’s Richard P. Holm, MD, Media Award at the recent SDSMA annual convention. The Media Award recognizes an individual who has helped promote the medical field and medical issues. At right is SDSMA President Robert E. For a small town, Faulkton, South Dakota has made some big investments in the arts. Its latest public art project will be a distinctive piece by an internationally acclaimed artist that’s sure to draw visitors from throughout the region. Artist Guido van Helten is expected to arrive in Faulkton around June 27. The Faulkton area has been anxiously awaiting his arrival, as he will be painting his murals on the elevator on the east side of Faulkton. His plan is to take a couple of more photos and tweak his planned design a little. Grid lines will be painted before the end of June. Plans for the painting started early last year. Work progressing at Hope’s Park

Concrete for the picnic shelters and the sidewalk at Hope's Park and Playground were completed last week, as well as the bathroom building and electrical. Bathroom fixtures will be delivered this week and the commemorative bricks are scheduled to be set in place this weekend.
