Support Nonprofits on Giving Tuesday
November 21, 2018
November 27 is Giving Tuesday, a day where people throughout our community, and the world, donate to the causes they are passionate about. This is a global day of giving. Unlike shopping holidays like Black Friday that focus on consumerism, this day is all about giving back to the community.
Giving Tuesday encourages us to look beyond the busyness of the holiday season and to consider those in our community who may need our help and support, along with the charities that are bridging the gap for those in need.
Donations Making a Difference In Faulkton
There are many organizations in our community making a difference in the lives of children and the elderly or working to protect animals or our environment. Most depend on donations and volunteers to support their operations and ensure they can deliver on their mission.
Many recent projects that make Faulkton a better place to live have been undertaken by local residents who want to make a difference. When the Faulkton Cemetery Association put out a call for donations for new flagpoles and flags, it was answered by current and former area residents. As of late October, new flagpoles and flags lined the Faulkton Cemetery entry roads. Four new service flags have also been added to the Circle of Flags.
Young area leaders have also been fundraising lately. The Faulkton Family, Career and Community Leaders of America donated $1,578 to help finish Hope’s Park and Playground near the Faulkton Area Medical Center. The project started with seed money from a local cancer survivor and will be completed with all private donations and grants.
Kelsey’s Krew held a benefit for the Juvenile Arthritis Foundation while juniors at Faulkton High School partnered with Dacotah Bank to raise funds for the Faulk County Cancer Support Group.
Perhaps one of the grandest examples of area giving is the Guido van Helten mural, on the Agtera grain elevator. The entire project was made possible by private donations.
“Faulkton is known as the community that always steps up when there is a need. We’re a giving community seven days a week,” says Linda Bartholomew of the Faulkton Area Economic Development Corporation (FAEDC).
This Giving Tuesday, we encourage community members to learn more about local opportunities for giving. Some great examples include:
Faulkton Area Foundation, which accepts and administer charitable gifts, gives grants to local nonprofit groups and organizations, and also gives scholarships to young people from our region.
Faulkton Area Medical Center Foundation, which supports our local medical center in providing healthcare to the residents of Faulk County.
Snake Creek Development Corporation, which handles donations for projects such as the Guido elevator mural project and the Garry Cunningham Sports Complex in Faulkton.
Reasons to Support Local Nonprofits
Nonprofits are an important part of our local and national economy. In fact, they represent 5 percent of our GDP. Nationally, nonprofits create over 14 million jobs and pay around $635 billion in annual wages. This is remarkable, but it is only part of the story.
In addition to creating jobs, local charities and nonprofit organizations do a lot to support our quality of life. While not always realized in economic gains, their impact is felt in our strong sense of community. They help to make Faulkton a great place to live and raise a family. Plus, local charities ensure that if anyone in our communities needs a little help, someone is there to lend a hand.
Other benefits of supporting local charities include:
- Teaching children the importance of generosity
- Getting a tax deduction
- Giving feels good!
Celebrate Giving, Bring About Change
By celebrating giving, we are also celebrating the power of our community members to bring about change. Every dollar donated to local nonprofits on Giving Tuesday is money that is staying within our communities and working to directly help our friends and neighbors.
The FAEDC recognizes that nonprofits help make our communities stronger. We encourage you to consider making a donation to your favorite nonprofit on Giving Tuesday.
