National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day with Buttercup

March 27, 2023

“March 29th marked National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day - a day to appreciate the immense value that family-owned small businesses bring to our communities,” - SBA. Faulkton Area Economic Development Corp recognizes and appreciates all of the mom-and-pop business owners that help keep Faulkton’s economy strong, our identity solid, and many of our residents employed. This year, we are highlighting Buttercup, located at 710 Main Street (Hwy 212).

Oil Up Buttercup

Owning a small business in a small town is not easy, but needed. Business owners rely on the local community for support. After retirement, JoDee Bryant received this support when she became a doTERRA consultant in 2015.

“doTERRA is a Latin derivative meaning, ‘gift of the earth.’ Essential oils are the essence of a plant, distilled and prepared for you to bring the power of nature into your home. Essential oils give a plant its scent, protect it from hazardous environmental conditions, and even assist it with pollination …” - doTERRA.

When asked why she chose to be a doTERRA consultant, JoDee replied, “To stay engaged with our community. doTERRA Essential Oils had become a part of our family’s lives, we wished to share our knowledge to help others.” The support was so great that on February 1, 2018, Jeff and JoDee Bryant opened Oil Up Buttercup as a mom-and-pop store. JoDee went from being an essential oils consultant to an essential oils gift shop store owner.

The community support continued and Faulkton expanded, giving Oil Up Buttercup the ability to enhance the customer service experience by offering classes to increase their essential oils knowledge.

Buttercup Coffee

While JoDee enjoyed and embraced her business owner experience, it caused her to view Faulkton through a different lens. As a business owner, she looked at what was still needed for this continually growing community. After much mention of wishing someone would open a Faulkton Coffee Shop, JoDee’s husband Jeff, encouraged her to add a coffee shop to their existing business. On September 15, 2022, the addition of Buttercup Coffee became a reality.

Just Buttercup

Having two very distinctive and drastically different commodities in one location prompted a rebrand. When you enter 710 Main Street, you aren’t entering Oil Up Buttercup or Buttercup Coffee. You’re entering just Buttercup! Buttercup, where you can purchase essential oils as silky smooth as butter AND a cup of a specialty of coffees.

When asked about future goals for Buttercup, JoDee replied, “This community is very supportive. The local Faulkton businesses work well together to give the surrounding community everything they need right here at home. My goal would be to continue the business for a few years and eventually find someone that would love to step into the business and keep the services we offer in Faulkton.”

Buttercup offers something for everyone! Whether it’s an in-house specialty sampler flight, non-coffee drink, or espresso, to themed gifts and special occasion gifts to learning about natural healthcare, Buttercup is the place to go. Buttercup also offers a small meeting space for 10-14 people. Stop by 710 Main Street, to start or end your day.

Mark your calendars now to participate in the All Roads Lead to Faulkton event, on April 29, 2023.
