Pheasant Hunting Season Is Here

October 30, 2024

South Dakota’s traditional pheasant hunting season has started and runs through January 31, 2025. Once the harvest season ends, late-season pheasant hunting offers ample options for hunters due to the cold weather reducing pheasant coverings, aka hiding places. With many hunters opting against braving the snowy conditions, late-season pheasant hunting offers winter hunters less competition. “South Dakota has the most birds, most opportunity, and most successful hunters,” - South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks.

Faulk County Hunting

Faulk County is a hunter’s haven with an abundance of:

  • Walk-In Areas - Privately owned lands operating as working farms and ranches.
  • Game Production Areas (GPAs) - Generally managed for the production and maintenance of all wildlife.
  • Waterfowl Production Areas - Owned by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service as satellites of the National Wildlife Refuge system.
  • School and Public Lands - Located in the western half of South Dakota and available to the public for hunting and fishing.
  • Bureau of Land Management - Land managed for livestock grazing and open to public hunting mostly west of the Missouri River.

For more detailed information on where to go and which spot is best for your hunting needs, visit the South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks Hunting Areas page.

The Game Production Areas (GPAs) allow all-terrain vehicles, as well as accessible vehicles for disabled hunters. Because of Faulk County’s vast hunting offerings, it is a top tourist destination during hunting season.

While South Dakota is renowned for its pheasant hunting season, “pheasants are just part of the hunting package you can enjoy. South Dakota offers a variety of game animals in a variety of settings.” In preparation for a successful hunt, remember these key factors:

  • Timing and Weather
  • Habitat and Terrain
  • Techniques and Strategies
  • Gear and Equipment
  • Safety and Ethics
